Jerry Kowalski was convicted of killing his brother and sister-in-law out of jealousy and anger in 2008 has won a new trial.

Shiawassee County Circuit Judge Matthew Stewart signed an order vacating Jerome Kowalski’s convictions.

Livingston County Prosecutor William Vailliencourt ask the court to vacate Kowalski’s convictions on grounds that Livingston County District Judge Teresa Brennan concealed the extent of her intimate relationship with a former Michigan State Police detective who investigated the case.

Van Hoek said he and Vailliencourt filed a joint motion last week to vacate the convictions.

“Absolutely, this is a victory,” Van Hoek said. “The fairest thing was to have a new trial.”
